ABA-SkIP
Skills Intervention Program

ABA-SkIP is designed for children ages 3 - 8 years old with autism or developmental disabilities and delays in language, motor skills, academic skills, play skills, as well as, inappropriate classroom behaviors.

ABA is designed to help consumers at risk of losing their residence or family stability because of challenging behaviors. Our professional staff use state-of-the-art behavioral methods to help consumers decrease their challenging behaviors and enhance social and self-management skills.

The consultative service program provides specialized speech/language, psychological and behavioral consultations to families and professionals.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

The liaison team, located at the Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC), serve as consultants for patients with mental retardation and/or autism.

Home and Community Based Services (HCS)

The Home and Community-based Services (HCS) program provides services to individuals with mental retardation who either live with their family, in their own home, in a foster/companion care setting or in a residence with no more than four individuals who receive services. In Home and Family Support (IHFS)

The In Home and Family Support (IHFS) program provides funding of "last resort" to individuals who are in need of resources to purchase a service(s) or item(s) that is directly related to their mental disability. Persons must meet eligibility criteria. To apply for IHFS services directly, you may contact the automated hotline at the number listed.

Intermediate Care Facility-Mental Retardation (ICF-MR)

The ICF/MR facility is a Medicaid certified program usually housing up to six (6) individuals in a residential group home setting with shift staff.

Respite Care

Respite Care provides short term temporary or intermittent direct care of a child or adult, either in-home or out-of-home.

  • In-Home Respite - Families choose their own respite provider (friend, relative, etc. ) who provides this service within the individual's home.
  • Out-of-Home Respite - The individual/family is given a choice of respite services, from a list of contracted providers. The program can be used for overnight or daytime stays.
Specialized Therapies and Rehabilitative Services (STARS)

The STARS clinic provides psychiatric, psychological, nursing and behavioral support services for people with mental retardation and mental illness, or autism spectrum disorders.

Coffeehouse

The Coffeehouse provides "Drop in" social skills and communication training for adults with Asperger's Disorder or autism and limited cognitive delays.

Employment Services

Employment Services offers job placement and job-coaching for adults . Individuals learn job readiness skills and then put those skills to use in finding the community job that is best suited to their needs.

Vocational Rehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities
  • Step 1: The parent, legal guardian, primary caregiver, or person in need of services can call MHMRA Access Center at (713) 970-7070.

  • Step 2: Once the referral is received from the Access Center, an Eligibility Coordinator will explain what documents are needed and how you can get them. For more information click here.

  • Step 3: After your documents are received, if necessary you will receive a Determination of Mental Retardation Assessment (DMR) to determine your eligibility for services.

  • Step 4: A Business Office staff member will discuss possible fees that may apply and assist with obtaining benefits for which you may be eligible.

  • Step 5: If you are eligible for services, a Service Coordinator will be assigned to help you and your family to understand your rights and available benefits.
